Nellie Yarborough has been fighting poverty, ignorance, hunger, homelessness and other societal ills for decades. As pastor of Mt. Calvary Holy Church in Dorchester MA, "Mama Nellie" runs a school for kids and is starting a day shelter for the most vulnerable of the homeless—children, the elderly and the mentally ill. She lives on a small stipend, turning most of her salary back to the church.

Iris Ybarra, one of the leaders of South San Antonio High School's Science Club, has braved jeers and teasing from other students to pioneeer environmental responsibility in their school and their town. These young people have led massive recycling drives. They raised money and planted drought-resistant plants and trees on the school grounds then planted fruit and nut trees for needy families. Zinaida Yefimovskaya single-handedly organized and runs a shelter in Russia for runaway girls, operating it without funding and drawing no salary for herself. Most of the girls are victims of abuse; Yefimovskaya provides them with a safe haven and emotional support.

Suzy Perkins Yehl, a registered nurse, left a secure job to found Rainbows for All God's Children, a peer support program in which children who have lost a parent can recover emotionally.

Ruth Young is the driving force of Parents on the Move, a New York City group for homeless families. She and her seven kids were homeless until they found a space in a welfare hotel, where she organized learning activities for kids, and got parents involved in their children's education.

Muhammad Yunus gave up his own security as a professor and used his own money to found the Grameen Rural Bank, which pioneered in making small “unsecured” loans to the desperately poor of Bangladesh, allowing them to create successful businesses.
