After personally blocking an herbicide truck that was about to spray her town’s favorite blackberry patch, artist Patty Clary of Arcata CA dedicated herself to getting a state-wide moratorium on roadside herbicide spraying. Steve Cockerham of Grand Island NE, a USDA meat inspector, blew the whistle on filthy and diseased meat shipments despite orders to look away. After his actions brought about a return to higher inspection standards, Cockerham started a campaign to educate the public and health care givers about the symptoms of illness caused by tainted food.

Amber Coffman of Glen Burnie MD devotes all her afterschool and weekend time and much of her meagre resources to an array of projects to help the poor. For a program she created, Happy Helpers for the Homeless, she recruits and organizes kids to help her make and deliver lunches to hungry street people each week.

Audrey Cohen of New York NY gave up a lucrative career to start training programs for women in leadership, management and para-professional positions. Though fellow educators have sometimes resisted her pioneering ideas, Cohen's innovations have affected schools nationwide. West Point graduate Peter Cole uncovered a massive theft of Army combat equipment, only to find himself threatened with a court martial. He persevered despite massive resistance by superior officers. Investigators uncovered Army-wide fraud that had cost the taxpayers over 118 million dollars; Cole was involuntarily discharged. He then spent years advocating for whistleblower protection laws.

Educator John Coleman of Chester VT led other men's lives for a week or a month—being homeless, a prisoner, a trash collector—then writing and speaking about his experiences, so others could understand what he'd learned.
