Former Hollywood costume designer Martine Colette founded Wildlife Waystation, the largest animal holding facility in the US. At Waystation there are often as many as 800 maimed, aged or simply unwanted wild or exotic animals enjoying a safe, comfortable home while Colette searches for homes for them in zoos or wildlife parks. Working on the tiniest of budgets, Colette takes no compensation for herself.

Sam Colella was a shy 7-year-old when he came up with the idea of having a “Disco Party for Peace,” a fundraiser to support kids in war-torn parts of the world. Sam sacrificed a year of playtime and made public appearances in order to produce the Party—which earned more than $15,000 for children in Iraq, Liberia, and Sudan and initiated a peace movement at his school that is still raising funds for the children of war.

Pest control inspector Dan Columbus of Glendale AZ blew the whistle on the State Board charged with monitoring the pesticide business. Risking his career, he proved the Board was not only negligent in their duties, but corrupt as well. Thanks to Columbus, there's a new Pest Control Board in Arizona, and customers are being protected.

Scott Commons of Dallas TX is a retired engineer who has totally devoted his life to his program to bring the therapeutic value of gardening to people who are physically, mentally or economically disadvantaged. Commons works at a Deaf Action center, senior adult day care centers, nursing homes, children’s playgrounds and at the VA hospital.

Lyndon Comstock left a secure job to start the Community Capital Bank in Brooklyn NY. The CCB funds affordable housing for low and moderate income people and makes loans to small businesses in poor neighborhoods. Known as "Mr. Goodbank," Comstock insists that CCB take only a modest return on its money, rather than going for maximum profits without regard for social damage.

Ann Connor and her husband, Reverend A.B. Short, have been sharing their Atlanta home with street people since 1982. In 1988 they started Cafe 458, a restaurant where the menu is enticing, the waiters friendly, the food free, and only the homeless can get reservations.

Amy Conrad is one of a group of teenaged single mothers who give speeches to their peers, urging them not to make "untimely choices" about sex. Describing their own lives to show how difficult it is to be a teen raising a child, the girls of the School-Age Parent Speakers Bureau remind their peers that sex can have serious consequences. For decades Mary Louise Cook of Harvey Cedars NJ has been the round-the-clock volunteer voice of home for offshore fishing boats. Known as "Sand Dollar," Cook uses her ham radio to provide help and friendship—talking boats through fog, relaying storm warnings, finding medical help and telling fishermen news of their families.

L.C. Coonse of Granite Falls NC, a chemistry teacher, fought a solitary battle to close down a toxic waste incinerator that was releasing harmful chemicals and making people sick. After getting it shut down, he went on to work on its cleanup.

Ed Cooper of Roxbury MA, started Boston Urban Gardens in 1974, lobbying the city to provide land where people in poor neighborhoods could grow food for the body and flowers for the soul. He went on to oversee 120 BUGs in the city, helping people eat better and providing bright spots in communities that have too few.

Mary Jo Copeland of Minneapolis MN devotes all her waking hours to the street people at the shelter she founded in 1985. Five hundred volunteers help her provide hot meals, clothing, showers, legal and medical assistance, travel expenses and emotional support to 10,000 people each month.

Peter Coppelman of Alexandria VA graduated from law school in 1968, one of many young attorneys planning altruistic careers. Coppelman actually did it, spending the next 40 years forgoing the enormously profitable options open to him, working instead for causes he believes in.

Toni Cordell, formerly of Edmond OK, rollerskated across the country to promote Operation Mainstream, a national literacy program. Cordell, a television producer who could barely read herself before enrolling in the program, came out as a former illiterate, gave up her job and used all her savings in her campaign to encourage illiterate people to seek help as she had.
