William Dow of Pittsboro NC is a doctor who decided to focus on the underlying causes of ill health: poverty, poor housing and malnutrition. Giving up a lucrative career, Dr. Dow works to move fresh produce directly from growers to consumers, and teaches solar energy techniques for heating homes and for growing healthy food.

Bob Drake and other volunteers of Keystone Enterprises helped turn their high unemployment mining community from a passive mindset into the excitement and dignity of entrepreneurship. Keystone members create employment opportunities for themselves and show others how to do the same.

In the last years of the Cold War, Dr. Dan Drew and his family created a partnership program with Soviet citizens interested in ending hunger and promoting world peace. The Drews continued their work even though people in their community called them Communists.

When Wendy Dubit discovered that kids in her New York City world had no idea where their food came from, she put aside her publishing work to change that. She organized a nonprofit that puts city dwellers to work in fields and orchards that feed the city, educating the city folk about their food, and greatly helping small-scale farmers survive.

Ruby Dubois of Burien WA devoted her life to the kids and their schools in Eastern Washington state. Once the teacher in a one-room schoolhouse, Dubois pioneered programs for the handicapped, developed a radio show providing rural teachers with educational news, and has driven all night to lobby the State for quality education in small rural schools.

Christina Dubowski of Santa Cruz CA speaks out publicly about a compulsive disorder that compels people to pull out their hair. Dubowski founded the Trichotillomania Learning Center, sold her business and worked without pay for two years to get information on the disease to sufferers and to the medical profession.

Stanley Dudek of St. Clairsville OH, owner of a small coal company, restores land that his company has stripmined so that it can be farmed again. Big coal companies who claimed that such restoration was impossible threatened Dudek and tried to shut him down. He kept right on. Legislators used his example to require restoration of mined lands by all mining companies.

Lenore Duensing of Milford NJ is a teacher, mother, and co-founder of Vision of Peace, which brought children of the USA and the USSR together through art exchanges and trips. Teaching conflict resolution, critical thinking, and communication skills, Vision of Peace helped kids understand how to live peacefully themselves.

Fran Dunbar of Owego NY and fellow members of the Hiawatha Purchase Committee, mortgaged their homes and businesses to buy Hiawatha island in the Susquehanna River and keep it "forever wild." The committee outbid a gravel company that wanted to mine the island, a place that legend claims as the birthplace of the Iroquois Nation.

Jimmy Dunne of Houston TX founded POPS (People Opposed to Paddling Students) to protest corporal punishment in the schools. Dunne's devoted efforts caused the Houston Independent School District to outlaw corporal punishment.

Anaida Duran of Brooklyn NY is a leader of the Toxic Avengers, neighborhood kids who took a stand against the "environmental racism," of companies that site dangerous manufacturing operations and toxic waste dumps in poor neighborhoods like their own. Through public meetings and petitions, the Toxic Avengers led their neighbors in facing down polluters.

Salva Dut and Dep Tuany were "lost boys" from rival tribes, both refugees from a civil war that devastated their country, Sudan. Now resettled in the US, Dut and Tuany have put tribal hatreds behind them to work together, raising funds to dig wells and help rebuild the nation that used to be their home.

Mary Dwan of Mesa AZ brought together the people on the Gila River Reservation to address community problems and work toward solving them. Dwan helped promote the construction of a house for a family in need, bringing the laborers a renewed sense of community.
