Neil Andre organized The Earth Angels of St. Louis MO, at-risk kids working to save an at-risk planet. These 9-12 years olds clean up their neighborhood—the city’s highest crime and drug-use area—run recycling projects, create wildlife habitats on empty lots, raise money for national environmental organizations and are planting a “Forest of Life,” each tree commemorating a St. Louis child who has died violently.

The Walker family — Morris, Lynn, Skye and Amye — of Boldgett OR have walked the Earth as the Earthwalkers, troubadours for the environment. They use music, humor and storytelling to deliver a serious environmental message at schools and community halls. They spent years on the road living in a small trailer and facing many angry anti-environmentalists. They now reach even more people via their cable TV show.

Marian Wright Edelman of Washington DC has devoted her life to speaking for people who can't speak for themselves in society—children. Attorney Edelman founded the Children's Defense Fund to lobby, organize, and raise funds for young people's well being. Edelman has been called "the 101st Senator on children's issues".

Joan Egner, T. Colin Campbell and Robert Ascher, three highly respected Cornell University professors, put their careers and research at risk to support a graduate student's claim that one of their fellow professors had plagiarized her work. The professors challenged the university and the colleague, who was accused of benefiting financially from the student's stolen research. The trio was rewarded with character attacks, intimidation and threats to their own research funding.

Camellia El-Antably of Port Townsend WA decided her high school's required Senior English reading list needed changing—of the 15 writers on the list, only two were women—and they were "optional." When Camellia asked to substitute women authors for half of the reading she was told absolutely not. She designed her own independent study course and boycotted the required class, even though she was told she might not graduate. Juanita Ellis of Dallas TX braved threats to challenge the inspection process during construction of the proposed Comanche Peak nuclear plant. Ellis' allegations of safety violations were found to be valid, and the construction was stopped.
