Julia Endicott of Everett WA was one of a group of high school students who wrote and put on a play in response to the deaths of two popular classmates. They were met with resistance from their teacher, the administration, and their friends, but these teens persisted. The play was a critical success—but more important to these young performers—the play helped their peers and the entire community deal with their shock and grief. Juliette Engel, a Seattle radiologist, was so appalled by women’s health care in the former Soviet Union that she sold her medical practice and her personal furniture and art, and then took out personal loans to fund sending hundreds of US obstetricians, nurses and midwives to teach in Russian hospitals. The non-profit organization she founded, MiraMed, is building a state-of-the-art maternity hospital in Moscow.
