Steve Hoffman of Salt Lake City UT gave up the security of his job as a US Fish and Wildlife Service biologist in 1987 to found HawkWatch International. Hawkins spent all his retirement money, took on a load of personal debt, and for three years worked 80 hours a week without pay to do the work the USFWS never seemed to get to: intense research on raptors. HawkWatch is now operating in seven states and providing vital research that may save the hawks of the West.

Shelley Honingbaum of Everett WA was one of a group of high school students who wrote and put on a play in response to the deaths of two popular classmates. They were met with resistance from their teacher, the administration, and their friends, but these teens persisted. The play was a critical success—but more important to these young performers—the play helped their peers and the entire community deal with their shock and grief.
