Sure that there were domestic violence victims with no place to go, Johnson left her teaching job to work at the shelter she created, which was immediately full all the time.

Kaneeseha Sonee Johnson of Hawthorn CA stood up against her fellow African-American fifth-graders to champion Asian classmates who were being harassed and shunned. Johnson tutored kids who didn't speak English, faced down the bullies on teir behalf, and got them included in playground games.

Kory Johnson of Phoenix AZ, responded to her sister's toxin-caused death with an envirornmental activism so dedicated that Greenpeace joined in to help this young volunteer fight a proposed toxic waste facility.

Lenwood Johnson of Houston TX led the fight to save a housing project, a hospital, and the entire historic Fourth Ward of Houston from over-zealous developers. A resident of the project himself, Johnson has a helping hand for everyone, devoting his efforts to countering what he considers imperious treatment by local officials of the poor, the old, and the politically powerless.

Growing up poor gave Patricia Johnson of Washington DC the determination to make life better for as many people as she could. She gave up her paying job and worked endless hours to make Christmas in April a national movement. Christmas in April volunteers in nearly 500 cities across the nation install new roofs, wheelchair ramps, paint walls and repair plumbing in the homes of the elderly, the disabled and the poor.

Roosevelt Johnson of Selma AL, a high school student and founder of the Selma chapter of 21st Century Leadership, enlisted gang leaders in confronting racism, defusing it, and pressuring slumlords to improve housing. Johnson also led evening study groups, voter registration drives, and counselling sessions.

Judith Johnsrud of State College PA, a former geography professor, lost her academic advancement, her health, and her own financial well-being to write, speak and testify about the dangers of radiation. Called the best informed anti-nuclear activist in the US, Johnson called for increasing radiation protection standards and controlling radioactive wastes.

Reporter David Johnston of Ocean City NJ used to write investigative stories for the LA Times. There he uncovered fraud in the United Way's use of donations and reported on the Board of Education's hiring of an accused child molester as an ethics teacher. Threats did not stop Johnson; being repeatedly pulled off stories did. He reported no such constraints on his new job as a reporter for a Philadelphia paper.

Isolated by townspeople and threatened by the KKK, the Jokis nevertheless won a court case, and the mural was removed.
