Malisa Matheny of Doylestown, PA has gone beyond her own health problems to help other young people who, like her, have serious gastrointestinal diseases. On IV treatment and tube-feeding herself, she started a network for young people with similar diseases, sends medical supplies to patients around the country, visits sick kids in the ICU, coordinates and monitors a list-serve, and is regional coordinator for people on IV tube-feeding in her area.

Balbir Mathur of Wichita KS gave up a profitable business to dedicate his life to fighting hunger through planting trees. Mathur is the founder of "Trees for Life," an organization that has planted almost a million food-bearing trees in India, and now supplies trees to other countries as well.

Adah Maurer of Berkeley CA, a former school psychologist, has devoted her life to outlawing corporal punishment in our schools, winning protective legislation in 19 states.

Percell Maynard of Upland CA overcame a lack of financial resources and his own addiction to drugs to assist others in beating addiction. After studying counseling, he founded Community Oriented Drug Education, a broad-service rehab center that helps addicts clean up and restart their lives.

Ewing Mays of Heber Springs AR lost his legs in World War II and used his retirement years to run the New Hope Center, providing other catastrophically injured people with one-on-one counselling and job training.

Veronica Maz of the District of Columbia resigned her professorship at Georgetown University to start a soup kitchen. She then added a women's shelter, children's programs and a traveling soup wagon. Because Maz does not approve of charity, people pay for their meals with aluminum cans or with small amounts of coins.

Loyce Mbewa-Ong’udi, a Kenyan living in the US, founded and fundraised for a nonprofit that helped the people back home in Rabour, Kenya develop their own solutions to the challenges of poverty and AIDS. Her mother, Rosemell Ong’udi, fed AIDS orphans in the village when other villagers wouldn’t even talk about AIDS and wouldn’t help her. Undeterred, she kept pushing; the women in the village were moved to help her create a nursery school and daycare for the orphans.

When he was in the seventh grade, Franklin McCabe III of Parker AZ started a music and light show called "Chaskae D.J." (CHESS-kay means First Son in Sioux). McCabe, a proud Navajo/Sioux who lives on the Colorado River Indian Tribes Reservation, decided to use Chaskae D.J. to fight substance abuse. McCabe sparked no-alcohol social events for Native Americans in Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Montana.

Tolbert McCarroll, Julie DeRossi and Marti Aggeler of Santa Rosa CA, members of the Starcross Community, have endured community ostracism to care for AIDS babies. They have been foster parents to unwanted children for years. Starcross Community is also involved in advocacy work for children with AIDS and street outreach for high-risk women, and care of HIV positive orphans in Romania.

John McCarthy of Swansea MA, the Superintendent of Swansea's Schools, stood up for the right of a student with AIDS to continue attending school. Despite strong community opposition, McCarthy insisted there was no evidence of danger to the other students and helped the community rally to the child's support.

Michael McCarthy of Vancouver BC gave up his own work and used all his savings to start a newspaper called Spare Change. Street people sell the paper and keep the money. Readers get street life insights, political commentary, and a local entertainment guide; vendors get a positive interaction with buyers and a lot of self respect.

Reverend James McCloskey of Princeton NJ, a former business executive, started Centurion Ministries to work on behalf of people who have been wrongly imprisoned. McCloskey gathers new evidence, tracks down witnesses, and presses the legal system so that justice is finally served.

Reverend Maurice McCrackin of Cincinnati OH established the first interracial congregation in the Presbyterian Church in 1945. He later ran Operation Freedom, an unofficial relief agency for people who lost homes or jobs because of their civil rights activities. Jailed many times for his civil rights actions, he founded Talbot House to assist former prisoners.
