George McDaniel of Columbia SC walked 51 miles on his 51st birthday,raising over $7,000 for Camp Rainbow, a holiday place for kids with cancer. McDaniel has repeated the fundraiser each birthday, walking a mile further each year.

Dina McDermott's neighborhood in Seattle was dangerous, demoralized and drug-ridden. But instead of moving on, McDermott dug in. Working with other residents, the police and the city, she organized a citizens’ safety committee and then created a summer program for neighborhood kids. Despite resistance and reprisals from the lawbreakers, local crime is down and families are reclaiming their neighborhood.

Ralph McGehee of Falls Church VA, a former CIA officer, blew the whistle on the agency, writing and speaking about illegal covert operations, and about the government's distortion of intelligence reports to support its policies. McGehee endures surveilance of his home, phone taps, and constant monitoring of his movements.

Movingman Joe McGrath of Boston MA is a member of the National AIDS Brigade. He and his fellow Brigaders defy Massachusetts law to distribute clean needles and AIDS-prevention kits to drug addicts, spending their own money to fund the program, and returning to the work after each arrest. Charles McLeroy of Nashville TN was a psychologist at Tennessee's Cloverbottom Hospital when it released its mentally handicapped adults. The young residents wanted to leave too, but there was no place for most of them to go. McLeroy, with no financial backing and virtually no support from the community, took out a personal loan to start the nonprofit Residential Services, which has placed hundreds of such young people in foster homes.

Max McYoung of Oak Harbor WA turned full-time crusader to protect the Skagit River. Retired from both the Navy and real estate after a series of heart attacks, McYoung ran up $8,000 in phone bills and endangered his own health in his fight to get the US Forest Service and Washington State to enforce Congress' designation of the Skagit as "forever wild and scenic." Congress finally coughed up $1 million for cleaning up the river.

Joe Medalia of Seattle WA, owner of Medalia Salvage, uses his business to train and encourage developmentally disabled and handicapped youngsters, taking dozens of them into his work force each year, despite the time and money spent on training and on correcting errors. Medalia also presses other business owners to follow his lead.

Medecins San Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) was started by French doctors who saw a need for a medical “strike force.” Volunteers, who must be ready to move out on a moment's notice, work for six-month shifts amid wars, rioting and natural disasters. MSF crews from six countries now race into hot spots all over the world.

Fred Mednick of Mercer Island WA left a secure headmastership to found Teachers Without Borders, a campaign to mobilize teachers around the world as a positive force for community development. With 300 volunteers in 84 countries, the nonprofit connects teachers worldwide to resources, to curricula, and to each other.

Frank Melton of Jackson MS, owner of a major television station, was so appalled by gang violence, that he put his money, influence and time into setting up a rigorous summer camp for gang members, teaching them to work their conflicts out non-violently.
