The Members of Protect Our World in Jacobsburg OH have stood against coal company actions in an area where the mining companies are very powerful. POW works to stop longwalling, a high-tech mining technique that bores a wide swath out of a coal seam mechanically, causing the ground above it to sink. Besides costing jobs, the technique damages or destroys streams, aquifers, septic tanks, forests and buildings.

David Purchase of Tacoma WA, a drug abuse counselor for 20 years, started the first needle exchange program in the US, on his own, with his own funds. The service is so critical to restricting the spread of AIDS that it has been copied by cities and counties across the country and is now supported in Tacoma by the health department.
