Carl Ross is a co-founder of Save America's Forests, lobbying relentlessly against the cutting of old growth forests and rallying environmental groups to do joint campaigns with SAF. Rossmiller, Shannen

Private citizen Shannen Rossmiller determined after 9/11 to do something. For Rossmiller, that became learning Arabic, researching terrorist tactics, and going online into their networks to extract information the FBI has used to thwart new attacks.

Rothman, Matthew

Matthew Rothman took great amounts of time out of his student life at Brown University to gain the trust of Providence's homeless and to photograph them. Rothman created an exhibit that he set up in Rhode Island's legislature, prompting politicians to vote for a major relief bill.

Rowe, Bob

Musician Bob Rowe has devoted his talent and his life to enriching the days of people in homes for the elderly, for vets and for the developmentally disabled. His nonprofit Renaissance Enterprises enlists other musicians and entertainers to volunteer with him in this venture, traveling constantly to do their gigs.

Rubio, Luis

Louis Rubio one of the leaders of South San Antonio High School’s Science Club, has braved jeers and teasing from other students to pioneer environmental responsibility in their school and in their city. These young people led massive recycling drives, raised money to plant drought-resistant plants and trees on the school grounds, then planted fruit and nut trees for needy families. Rudberg, Twinkle

Montreal's Twinkle Rudberg took the tragedy of her husband's murder by a teenaged mugger and turned it into L.O.V.E. (Leave Out ViolencE). LOVE brings perpetrators and victims together to learn about non-violence.

Ruff, Howard

Howard Ruff of Pleasanton CA used his clout as a well-known financial consultant to secure the arrest of a Bangkok orphanage director and his co-conspirators, men who were sexually abusing the children in the orphanage. Ruff acted despite threats on his life and a significant drain on his income and his time, a drain that continues as he sponsors a new orphanage where the children are safe.

Ruthsdotter, Mary

Mary Ruthsdotter and Molly MacGregor of Windsor, California have given up their teaching careers, and invested all their time and money into getting the stories of women’s lives told in the nation's history classes. As founders of the National Women's History Project, the two women have gotten March of each year declared a time for studying women's achievements in schools and colleges across the country.

Ruud, Casey

Casey Ruud and James Simpkin risked their careers to blow the whistle on safety problems at the Hanford nuclear plant in Washington State when they both worked there. Their congressional testimony resulted in Hanford’s nuclear reactor being shut down for safety violations. Ruud and Simpkin were harassed and threatened with demotions, eventually leaving Hanford to try restarting their careers in South Carolina.

Ruzicka, Marla

Marla Ruzicka, named a Giraffe Hero in 1996 for her early work as a humanitarian, has been killed in Baghdad on her way to aid an Iraqi family. She died as she lived her entire life, helping those in need. Ryan, Jack

Jack Ryan of Peoria IL, a veteran of 22 years of service as an FBI agent, refused an order to arrest non-violent peace activists for "domestic terrorism."  Fired for this display of conscience, Ryan is seeking reinstatement of his pension, and is teaching non-violence at a small college.
