Helen Shanbrom of Santa Ana CA has tirelessly crusaded for truck safety since her son was killed by a speeding, out-of-control truck. Once a private, apolitical person, she has become a full-time, unpaid lobbyist for truck safety, inspiring state legislation that is credited with saving thousands of other families from the grief she experienced.

Steve Shapiro, Sue Ellen White-Hansen, Debora Valis, Neil Colburn, Candace Culver, Jerry Sanders, Sylvia Sanders, Harry Wilbert, Myrl Wilber, Pat Goff and Jack Noel were members of Save the Trees, a group that worked fifteen years to save the last old-growth trees on Whidbey Island in Washington. These islanders began by standing in front of the ancient trees as heavy machinery moved toward them. They went on to lobby public officials and go through the courts, winning a long battle to protect not only their island’s last giant trees, but also other old-growth throughout the state.

Anatoly Sharansky, now of Jerusalem, Israel, was for many years a spokesman for Jews unable to leave the USSR and a witness against all Soviet human rights abuses. Spied upon and harassed by the KGB, he became more active and outspoken. Even during 13 years in a gulag, he continued to speak out for freedom. An international campaign secured him an exit visa to Israel.

Donna Sheehan of Marshall CA impulsively used her car to block a herbicide truck that was about to spray some wild berries that people in the community had always picked and eaten. Though she was threatened with arrest, Sheehan refused to drive away; eventually the sprayer backed off. Sheehan then let her art career slide for eight years to found MOW!, waging a successful campaign to get roadsides mowed instead of poisoned.

Dan and Patricia Shepherd of Fowler CA pushed neighbors and officials to figure out the connection between an unusual number of Fowler kids with leukemia, the town wells, and the chemicals used by the area's agribusinesses. Dan's barber shop was boycotted, the family was shunned and threatened, but the town finally shut down four contaminated wells.

In 1983 Vladimir Shestakov of St. Petersburg, Russia, began to type out his own translations of Western books he felt should influence Russian thinking. Five copies at a time, he produced and distributed books by Jonathan Schell, Helen Caldicott and Carl Sagan. A key link between citizen-diplomats from the West and private Soviet citizens, Shestakov was harassed by suspicious officials but never stopped his translating and his working with foreign nationals.

Rosbene Shields of Atlanta GA once dealt drugs in his housing project. After turning his own life around, he endured threats to his life as he broke up drug deals, talked to dealers about quitting the business, and stayed with kids who are trying to clean up their lives.

When Betty Shilling of Kingman AZ discovered that her area had no rehabilitation equipment for her son and others with serious spinal injuries, she dedicated herself to creating and running a full-scale gym and rehab center for the handicapped, charging nothing to families without means.

Reverend A.B. Short and his wife, Ann Connor, have been sharing their Atlanta home with street people since 1982. They are the founders and ongoing hosts of Cafe 458, a restaurant where the menu is enticing, the waiters friendly, the food free, and only the homeless can get reservations.
