Mimi Silbert has devoted her life to a program that takes in former prison inmates and turns out hardworking, responsible citizens who do not return to prison. Silbert's "Delancy Street" has spread from its home base in San Francisco to other cities, where the tough love and hard work Silbert prescribes are changing ever more lives.

Sue Silbert, a sociology professor at CalState Northridge, teamed up with food broker Jack Berlin to provide over 25,000 real Christmas feasts for needy families in L.A. Silbert's organization, One Voice, soon had over a thousand supporters who help her provide clothes and food year-round.

Simoneaux, Gloria

Gloria Simoneaux of San Rafael CA visited a hospital for terminally ill kids and was shocked to find no art supplies. For years after that, Simoneaux, an artist herself, brought art supplies and a listening ear to dying kids in several hospitals. Despite warnings that she would burn out and despite having no funding for years, she extended her work to kids in 16 homeless shelters.

Simpkin, James

James Simpkin and Casey Ruud risked their careers to blow the whistle on safety problems at the Hanford nuclear plant in Washington State when they both worked there. Their Congressional testimony resulted in Hanford's nuclear reactor being shut down for safety violations. Simpkin and Ruud were harassed and theatened with demotions, eventually leaving Hanford to try restarting their careers in South Carolina.

Simpson, Donald and Sandy

Donald and Sandy Simpson of Charlotte NC put all their time and money into "Mission Air Ministries," a free air ambulance service covering 38 states. Paid pilots and medical staff are augmented by hundreds of pilots, mechanics, medical personnel and business people who volunteer their time and gear.

Slaughter Warmke, Candice

A "graduate" of a women's shelter, Candice Slaughter of San Antonio FL was harassed in her community for publicly insisting that wife abuse was widespread there. Despite the flak, she opened a women's shelter that proved to be sorely needed. She pushed the Florida courts to review cases of women imprisoned for murdering their husbands and to pardon those who had been defending themselves.
