Englishman James Stevens sold his house and his clothing stores in Gloucester to open Udayan (Resurrection), a refuge in Calcutta for children with leprosy. At the refuge, children are given medical care, proper nutrition, and an education. When Stevens’ fortune was totally spent, Udayan was saved—and expanded—through the efforts of French author Dominique Lapierre. Thousands of children have been saved from poverty and death by the refuge called Resurrection.

When Mark and Margaret Stewart of Ketchum ID read reports that there were 10,000 starving kids living on the streets of Khartoum, Sudan, they flew there and organized a program that feeds, clothes and educates those homeless children. When the program was running well, they turned it over to a Sudanese team to operate.

Michael Stewartt of Santa Fe NM, a former Alaska bush pilot, founded "Lighthawk," a unique flying service that works as an eye-in-the-sky for conservation groups. Stewartt has had threats to sabotage his plane, but continues to expose environmental abusers around the world.

John Stockwell of Elgin TX, a former CIA officer, blew the whistle on illegal operations by the agency. Despite threats and financial hardships, Stockwell continues to lecture, write books and lobby for a CIA that is restricted to gathering intelligence, with no interfering in other nation’s affairs.

Marion Stoddart of Groton MA devoted 20 years to the clean-up of the severely polluted Nashua River, despite the derision of people who considered the Nashua dead. Today fish once again swim in the Nashua and people picnic on its shores.

Anna Stoika of Chicago IL swam the Danube in 1984 to escape repression in her native Romania. Stoika needed as much courage when she exposed the corruption she'd seen as a ticket agent for the Chicago Transit Authority. Attempts to steal her documentation of misdeeds wrecked her apartment and sent her to the hospital—twice. Finally a lone CTA investigator believed Stoika, and a full-scale probe by his department and the FBI confirmed her charges.

Astrophysicist Clifford Stoll was working at Lawrence Berkeley Physics Labs when he discovered evidence that someone was going through the Lab's computers to access the databases of military installations and defense contractors. Stoll spent so much time rigging traps for the thief, he almost lost both job and mate before his persistance led to the arrest of a German hacker who was selling the stolen information to the KGB.

Barron Stone, financial forecaster for one of South Carolina's largest power companies, detected that the company was underreporting profits in order to avoid legally mandated rate decreases to customers. When management stone-walled his objections, he reported the crime to the state utility commission. Stone was demoted, harrassed, isolated and ignored by the company, but an independent audit proved him right and led to millions of dollars being returned to the company's customers.

Ganga Stone was a founder of God's Love, We Deliver, a nonprofit that took gourmet meals to homebound people with AIDS in the days when no one was sure how AIDS was communicated. Hundreds of these caring New Yorkers deliver five-course meals to PWA's all over the city. (See also Jane Best.)

Eleanor Stopps of Port Ludlow WA waged a successful 10-year effort to turn Protection Island, nesting place for three-quarters of the seabirds in Puget Sound, into a wildlife refuge. The activist retiree lobbied relentlessly, using her savings to pay the costs of her campaign.

Karen Storek of Tucson AZ, gathers and distributes free parenting information to help “those most in need and hardest to reach.” Despite her own limited finances and time (she’s a single mom raising two kids), she's created a nonprofit called the New Parents' Network. NPN has helped thousands of parents through an electronic bulletin board, interactive kiosks, public service announcements, and a multilingual website.
