Gail Story Sams of Erwin TN endured verbal abuse and anonymous phone threats when she roused her neighbors into protesting a toxic waste dump that was poisoning the water in their community. After the Erwin waste dump was closed down, Sams went on to help other communities protect themselves.

Coach Cleveland Stroud and principal Henry Gibbs of Rockdale County High School in Georgia gave students an unforgettable lesson in ethics when they forfeited the state basketball championship after discovering that an ineligible Rockdale team member had played for 45 seconds in one of the games. The principal and the coach faced down enormous pressure from the community but they held their ground.

Jerry Sugerman of St. Louis MO quit his job to fight a plan to dam the Meramac River and flood its fertile valley. It took 10 years and a lot of hard work, but the Meramac became the first dam project to be "de-authorized" because of residents’ protests.

Diane Sullivan Morris of New York NY was the first businesswoman who accepted Eugene Lang's lead and pledged to pay for the college educations of a whole classroom of East Harlem kids. Morris spends a lot of time with "her" kids, counseling them and urging them to study.

Teenager Sarah Swagart of Oak Harbor WA decided it wasn't right for the town to treat skateboarding as a crime, so she became the skaters' champion. Despite her own shyness, Swagart addressed the city council, worked with the press, organized fundraisers, and convinced most of the town—including the US Navy base there—to support the building of a public skateboard park.

Rita Swan of Sioux City IA, lost her child to untreated meningitis because of her church’s belief in faith healing. She left her church and founded Children's Healthcare is a Legal Duty. Despite threats and abusive letters and phone calls, she works for the repeal of religious-immunity legislation in the 42 states where it exists.

Susan Sweetser of Essex Junction VT has dedicated her life to reforms that protect crime victims like herself from endless delays and traumatic treatment by the legal system. Kidnapped and raped by a man just released from imprisonment for a similar crime, Sweetser then endured 10 years of such legal horrors that she became an advocate for crime victims. Eileen Szychowski of Scottsdale AZ, the first disabled person to become a mounted National Park Ranger, founded and directs "Camelot," a free therapeutic equestrian program for people with disabilities.
