Mutang Tu’o of Borneo is fighting to preserve the rainforest in which the Penan and Kelabit hunter-gatherers have always lived. When Paren and his allies were unable to stop clearcutters with non-violent road blockades and petitions to the government, they overcame their fears of leaving their world for the first time, slipped past authorities, and embarked on an international campaign to tell the world their story. Ellen Turner of Knoxville TN retired from nursing and, with her twin sister Helen Asher, began feeding the homeless out of a church basement. Despite the sisters’ advancing years, ill health, evictions, uncertain financing, and the dangers of serving any and all comers, their Love Kitchen serves 900 people twice a week, many of them homebound.

Joseph Turner has been sued and threatened for his high-profile activism and his relentless campaign against the polluters of Pennsylvania’s waterways. His nonprofit sues polluters and turns settlements over to organizations that improve water quality.
