Veterans' Vietnam Restoration Project

Members of the Veterans' Vietnam Restoration Project in Garberville CA are helping to rebuild the country they once helped destroy. Members of the Project build desperately needed health clinics throughout Vietnam. VVRP also acquires and delivers medical supplies for the clinics.

Vierthaler, Bonnie

Bonnie Vierthaler of Portland ME is a professional visual artist whose collages take tobacco ads and alter them to tell the true, horrifying story of smoking. Vierthaler sold her house to pay the expenses of putting her educational exhibit "The Joy of Smoking" on the road, touring schools across the country.

Vietnam Revisited

Gene Spanos (IL), Nate Genna (MA), Frank Noe (MA), Robert Dalton (MD), Mike Wallace (KS) and Bill Johnson (CT) are members of Vietnam Revisited, a crew of veterans intent on rebuilding the country they once fought in. They began by removing land mines they laid 25 years earlier, and went on to help supply medical facilities in Vietnam.

Vignola, Michele

Michele Vignola and Lisa Faruolo decided that Lakota activist Leonard Peltier had been railroaded into prison. They left their families and jobs to move to Kansas and work on the Peltier defense campaign, tirelessly meeting with support groups, organizing fundraisers, doing legal research and speaking out for Peltier's release and for justice for all Native Americans.

Villa, Alvaro

Alvaro Villa gave up a comfortable career as an engineer in Bogota to become a community organizer in his country’s mountain villages. Working respectfully with villagers, Villa helped them achieve their own dreams of healthy, well-fed children who could read and write. Soon after Villa’s Giraffe commendation reached him, he was kidnapped and held for ransom by terrorists who mistook him for a rich man. He was never seen again.

Villareal, Ernesto

Ernesto Villareal of Marsing, Idaho used his personal clout as a star high school football player to stop racist taunts at the team’s games. "Neto" risked his spot on the team when he led Latino players in a boycott of football practice. The school instituted a get-tough campaign against racism and got the insults stopped.

Viola, Kathleen

Dr. Michael Viola and his wife Kathleen dodge missiles in war-torn countries to deliver medical supplies and bring children back to the US for surgeries and treatment the children can’t get in their home countries. The Violas’ nonprofit Medicine for Peace has helped hospitals in places like Iraq and El Salvador, and has saved the lives of children like Sarah, a Turkomen from northern Iraq, whose malformed heart was repaired by New York doctors.

Vogt, Tanja

Tanja Vogt of West Milford NJ organized her fellow students to work for the banning of styrofoam; the campaign spread throughout the state and then the country. Tanja's environmental club then joined a national campaign to press the country's giant fast food franchisers to give up styrofoam too.
