Warhaftig, Zorach

Zorach Warhaftig of Jerusalem, Israel, put his life in jeopardy to help thousands of Jewish refugees escape Lithuania during World War II. As governments and diplomatic missions crumbled, Warhaftig managed to arrange passports and safe passage for people being pursued by the Nazis for extermination.

Warsaw-Gazzola, Linda

Linda Warsaw of San Bernardino CA was only 12 when she founded Kids Against Crime. Her group soon grew to more than 3,000 members in the US and abroad. As an adult she continued helping kids deal with the effects of crime, training teens to run a hot-line for crime victims and sponsoring graffiti cleanups.

Wassmuth, Bill

Bill Wassmuth of Seattle WA risked his life to speak out against racial prejudice in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. As spokesperson for area residents appalled by white supremacists, Wassmuth endured threats and the bombing of his house. Wassmuth went on to head the NW Coalition Against Malicious Harassment.

Leon Watkins of Los Angeles CA founded the Family Helpline Volunteers, where he and over 80 private citizens risk their personal safety to set up communications between the community and the street gangs of South Central.

Watson, Carol

Carol Watson founded Missing Children Minnesota after she discovered there were no agencies to help her find her abducted son. Since getting him back, she's used her experience to counsel other parents in their searches. She’s endured threats from angry abductors and 60-hour, unpaid work weeks to help frantic parents.

Canadian Paul Watson has repeatedly risked his own life to protect whales and other creatures of the sea. As a founder of both Greenpeace and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, Watson sails the seas disrupting illegal whaling, fishing and seal-hunting operations, all while keeping his vow to never harm a living creature—including humans.

Webb, Charles

When structural engineer Charles Webb worked at the Brunswick Nuclear Power Plant in North Carolina, he reported to the managers on serious safety problems he'd uncovered. He was fired. Webb went public with charges that the company has been endangering public safety by covering up reports such as his since 1984.

Welch, Dwight

As the EPA's expert in home aerosols, Dwight Welch urged the agency to put warning labels on all aerosol products when CFC's were replaced by flammable propellants. Ignoring efforts to shut him up, Welch uses his position as president of a union at EPA to end bad science there and to stop unethical influence from the manufacturers of products the EPA is supposed to monitor.

Wells, Vicki

Former private investigator Vicki Wells created the Cancer Support Community, where "people who have faced cancer help people facing cancer." Wells not only invested all her savings in the program, she worked two years without pay to get CSC going.
