Roger Wentling, a soil conservation expert at the US Department of Agriculture, was ordered by the Department not to teach farmers low-input, sustainable agriculture. Wentling resigned so that he could be free to go on teaching this non-polluting, productive way of farming.

Brad Wetmore of Vashon Island WA wanted to teach kids about the shores and waters of beautiful Puget Sound, so he commissioned the building of a boat that is now his floating classroom. Wetmore personally guaranteed the costs of the program and has worked fulltime without pay to sustain it.

Jim White of McFarland CA is the most successful track coach in the state, but he and his wife, Cheryl White, have turned down all offers to move from poverty-stricken McFarland to a more lucrative, comfortable place. "Coach Blanco" and his wife are committed to helping his largely Latino teams not only win meets but also believe in themselves and the possibilities for their lives.

Gloria White of Fort Smith AR founded Project Compassion, a one-on-one volunteer program to provide friends and visitors for people in nursing homes who have no "outsiders" to visit them. For decades she's been the fulltime, unpaid coordinator of the project, which also provides music, arts, crafts, pet therapy, physical fitness and parties in 74 nursing homes.

Sue Ellen White-Hansen, Steve Shapiro, Debora Valis, Neil Colburn, Candace Culver, Jerry Sanders, Sylvia Sanders, Harry Wilbert, Myrl Wilbert, Pat Goff and Jack Noel were members of Save the Trees, a group that worked fifteen years to save the last old-growth trees on Whidbey Island in Washington. These islanders began by standing in front of the ancient trees as heavy machinery moved toward them. They went on to lobby public officials and go through the courts, winning a long battle to protect not only their island’s last giant trees, but also other old-growth throughout the state.

Peter Willcox of Hamburg, Germany captained Greenpeace's Rainbow Warrior through dangerous missions to protest sealing, whaling and environmental pollution--before it was sunk by the French Secret Service. Moving on to captain the Rainbow Warrior II, Willcox continued to campaign against nuclear and environmental threats in the South Pacific.
