Witness for Peace is a nonprofit whose volunteers go to Nicaragua, helping people there rebuild their country and cope with the horrors of war. The volunteers record any human rights abuses they see, then send their reports to the press, to Congress, and to their fellow citizens back in the US.

Hazel Wolf of Seattle WA has devoted her long life to civil rights, health and housing programs, equality for women, and protection of the environment. In her 90's she coordinated the actions of Northwest environmentalists and the region's tribal leaders, and smuggled medical supplies into Nicaragua.

Beautician Faye Wood of Colrain MA insisted on doing the hair of a woman with AIDS, despite complaints from her customers and employees. Wood began urging her fellow evangelical Christians to show more compassion for people with AIDS. She sold both her businesses and dedicated the proceeds to building a retreat for people with AIDS and their caregivers.

When journalist Ken Wooden did a story on convicted child molestors, he became so concerned that he gave up his journalistic detachment to develop and lead "Child Lures Prevention," a program that teaches kids how to protect themselves from predators.

Millie and Walt Woodward of Bainbridge Island WA, publishers of a local newspaper, protested the forced relocation of Bainbridge's Japanese Americans to distant internment camps in 1942. Although the Woodwards’ advocacy brought them threats, hate mail, cancelled subscriptions and the loss of advertising revenue, they continued to protest, and ran news of the families in the camps throughout the war years.

Herman Wrice of Philadelphia PA leads his neighbors in driving out drug dealers. He challenges authority-haters with a pointed question: "Who do you hate the most, cops or drug dealers?" Wrice sparked a new spirit of cooperation with the law that led to a 12% drop in the area's crime rate.

Pat Wright started the Total Experience Gospel Choir in 1971, and since then has taught hundreds of Seattle’s poorest kids not only to sing gospel but also to study and work hard, take care of themselves and others, and generally walk a righteous path through life. Running on little to no money, Wright takes no salary but sees that her kids have food, clothes, scholarships and plenty of self-esteem.
