GH Tomás Ordoñez y Joaquín Martínez Christensen – Festejo Solidario

Tomás y Joaquín crearon un proyecto que nació en la villa La Cava de San Isidro. Llevan festejos de cumpleaños cada semana para chicos de 2 a 12 años.

Tomás y Joaquín se conocen desde muy chicos, vivían en el mismo barrio, tienen una larga historia de juegos compartidos y más de una vez, también compartieron el botín que conseguían en las piñatas de cumpleaños.

Un día, cuando Joaquín cumplía 25 años y todos le preguntaban cómo lo iba a celebrar y qué regalos quería, él pensó en cuántos chicos hay que nunca tuvieron esa posibilidad, la de festejar sus cumpleaños. Entonces decidió que su regalo sería el de animar el festejo de alguno de esos chicos. Lo habló con Tomás y juntos dieron forma al proyecto y trabajaron para que el primer festejo sea posible.

Así fue como el 10 de junio de 2017 celebraron los primeros cumpleaños. Isa y Ana cumplían cinco, Franco ocho, Mariano y Ailen diez y Mili doce. Fue en el centro Enbarriarte en La Cava de San Isidro, una villa de la provincia de Buenos Aires formada en los años 50. Las villas en Argentina son asentamientos informales con viviendas precarias. Allí, al igual que en otras villas del país, el agua potable, las cloacas y las calles asfaltadas, escasean. En cambio, abundan las situaciones de violencia y de droga. Para los que no viven en el barrio, entrar suele resultar difícil porque se transforman en intrusos y no siempre son bien recibidos.

Joaquín y Tomás se animan a entrar para que al menos durante las horas que dura el festejo los chicos puedan lanzarse al mundo infantil y ser agasajados en su día. Como dice Pablo Marchetti en sus crónicas publicadas en Tercer Cordón: “Si andás cerca de la villa, el consejo siempre es el mismo: cuidado. ...La Cava no es la excepción. No sólo eso: La Cava es uno de los lugares donde hay que andar con más cuidado.¨

Mientras se gestaba esta idea-deseo, Joaquín y Tomás descubrieron que el Observatorio de la Deuda Social Argentina consideraba el festejo de cumpleaños infantil como un indicador del desarrollo humano y social de la niñez. La celebración de cumpleaños contribuye a formar la identidad de los niños y niñas, a sentirse valorados, a reforzar la noción del tiempo y a reforzar su autoestima, de allí su importancia. Ésto los motivó e impulsó aún más para seguir creciendo y poder incluir en los festejos a más cantidad de chicos.

El proyecto creció rápido y en un año de trabajo voluntario consiguieron hacer de Festejo Solidariouna organización sin fines de lucro que colabora todos los meses con más de 500 chicos de los centros Manos de La Cava, Hogar de acogida Laura Vicuña, Enbarriarte, María Auxiliadora, La fuerza la hacemos todos y Talita Kum, todos ubicados en el conurbano bonaerense.

Una vez al mes los voluntarios de Festejo Solidario visitan los distintos centros vecinales y llevan animación, regalos, comida, piñatas, tortas y decoración para festejar el día de todos los chicos que hayan cumplido entre 2 y 12 años durante ese mes. A través de los festejos solidarios buscan aportar al desarrollo de chicos en situación de vulnerabilidad.

Hoy ya suman 50 colaboradores al proyecto y animaron 25 cumpleaños. También lograron que varias empresas se sumen a la ayuda para poder aumentar la cantidad de festejos y de chicos beneficiados.

Tomás y Joaquín eligieron usar su tiempo libre para ayudar a estos chicos, decidieron destinar parte de sus sueldos para lanzar este proyecto y se animan a ingresar en barrios con altos niveles de delincuencia. Pero quieren más. Más cumpleaños, más chicos festejando, más barrios que visitar y especialmente, más amiguitos que entre risas les piden que vuelvan rápido, para seguir jugando.

(Charity Birthday Parties)

Tomás and Joaquín conceived a project that was born in La Cava de San Isidro, a shanty town in the province of Buenos Aires. Every week, they throw birthday parties for children aged 2 to 12.

Tomás and Joaquín have known each other since they were children: they used to live in the same neighbourhood and share a lot of childhood games. More often than not, they would also share the prizes they got from birthday piñatas.

One day, when Joaquín turned 25, and people asked him how he wanted to celebrate it and what presents he wanted to receive, a thought crossed his mind: he thought of all the children that had never had that chance to celebrate their birthdays. He then decided that his present to himself would be to throw birthday parties for some of those children. He had a word with Tomás and, together, they began to give shape to this project. They worked and made every effort for the first birthday party to be possible.

This is how, on 10 June 2017, they threw the first birthday party. Isa and Ana had turned 5, Franco had turned 8, Mariano and Ailen had turned 10 and Mili, 12. The party was held at the assistance centre Centro Enbarriarte, in San Isidro’s La Cava, a shanty town in the province of Buenos Aires that appeared in the 1950s. Shanty towns in Argentina are informal settlements with precarious dwellings. There, as well as in other shanty towns in the country, there is a lack of drinking water, sewers and paved roads. In contrast, violent and drug-related situations abound. For those who don’t live there going into the neighbourhood is usually difficult because they are seen as outsiders and they are not always welcome.

Joaquín and Tomás are courageous enough to enter La Cava so that children can enjoy being such for at least the time the party lasts and be lavished with attention during their special day. As Pablo Marchetti states in the chronicles on his website called Tercer Cordón: “If you find yourself near a shanty town, the piece of advice is always the same: be careful. …La Cava is no different. But not only that: La Cava is one of the places where you need to be most careful”.

While this idea-wish was blossoming, Joaquín and Tomás discovered that the Observatorio de la Deuda Social Argentina (Social Debt Observatory) regarded the celebration of children’s birthday parties as an indicator for human and social development during childhood. The celebration of birthdays contributes to forging children’s identity, making them feel appreciated, reinforcing the notion of time and improving their self-esteem, hence its importance. This has motivated Joaquín and Tomás and has actively encouraged them to keep growing so as to be able to include more children in the events.

The project has developed fast, and in one year of voluntary work, they managed to turn Festejo Solidario (Charity Birthday Parties) into an non-governmental organization which, every month, helps more than 500 childrenfrom different assistance centres such as Manos de La Cava, Laura VicuñaFoster Home, Enbarriarte, María Auxiliadora, La fuerza la hacemos todosand Talita Kum, located on the outskirts of the province of Buenos Aires.

Once a month, Festejo Solidario’s volunteers visit the different local assistance centres and they bring entertainers, presents, food, piñatas, cakes and decoration with them to celebrate the birthday of all the children who have turned between 2 and 12 that month. By means of these charity birthday parties, they try to support the development of children who are in vulnerable situations.

To date, the project has 50 volunteers and they have already given 25 parties. They have also managed to enlist several companies to help them increase the number of parties held and of children who enjoy this opportunity.

Tomás and Joaquín have chosen to spend their free time helping children and have allocated a part of their salaries to launch this project, for which courage to enter neighbourhoods with a high level of crime is needed. Nevertheless, they want more. More birthday parties, more children celebrating, more neighbourhoods waiting to be visited and, especially, more smiling friends who ask them to come back to continue having fun.
